Created in 1970, the Les Hivernales festival led to the creation of one of the twelve Centres de développement chorégraphique (Centres for choreographic development) in France. CDCN – Les Hivernales welcomes artists for residencies, develops introductory projects to contemporary dance, and organises two festivals every year, Les Hivernales in February and L'Été danse au CDCN in July. The CDCN theatre, located in the heart of Avignon, can seat 185 spectators.
