ARCHIVES 2000 / La Cerisaie (The Cherry Orchard)

Is it necessary to recount the whole of The Cherry Orchard with its characters who are unaware that the world around them has changed and, desperately attached to their property are going to have to abandon it, heavy hearted ? It is perhaps not useful to go into any more details, especially as Mozgó Ház (The Mobile Home) company and its director László Hudi use Chekhov's play as a mere starting point and subsequently move farther and farther away from it. This Cherry Orchard is not The Cherry Orchard. This Cherry Orchard is an imaginary journey that begins where Chekhov's work leaves off. The author would not recognise his own words, but he would certainly find his mark. In tribute to Chekhov, a trained doctor who discovered that story-telling was often a more efficient cure than sophisticated medical treatment, the troupe, since it formed six years ago, practices "Literary Pharmacy". The stories of each and every one emerge like rabbits out of a magician's hat. The success of this young Budapest-based company demonstrates that it has managed to find a remedy for the lives of its own members. They have tremendous energy which they use to electrifying effect on stage.
