A Greek filmmaker in exile returns to his country, looking for the original reels of the first film shot in the Balkans by the Manaki brothers at the beginning of the 20th century. Riding taxis, buses, trains, and boats through different Balkan countries after the fall of communism, from Bulgaria to the nascent Republic of Macedonia, he will eventually end up in Sarajevo, during the Bosnian War. There, he will find the precious reels, saved by an old projectionist desperately trying to preserve the film legacy of an imploding country. To travel with Angelopoulos is to accept to sail between past and present, History and legend, representation and reality.
